The Sims Confirmed for GameCube [ GameSpot ]

Electronic Arts announced today that, following success on PlayStation 2, The Sims is now in development for GameCube. Like PS2 version, the games will include a level-based mode called "Get A Life" and numerous different characters and creatures to interact with, as well as other features not with the PC version. A two-player mode will be supported as well, allowing for cooperative or competitive play between Sims.

You know what, we've done it. Gamers have grown so tired of hearing the phrase "Get a life" over and over, we've finally gone and programmed one.

New Deals = WIN [ Gamesradar ]

Nintendo is doing a new promotion (in Europe!) from February 3rd to March 20th in which when you buy a GameCube at the regular price of $149.99 you can choose a game for free...out of a selection. But the selection isn't all that bad. The games to choose from are Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, Wave Race: Blue Storm, Disney’s Magical Mirror, Doshin the Giant, Luigi's Mansion, NBA Courtside 2002 and Pikmin.

Funny to see Doshin the Giant in there, I thought that wasn't coming out for like another six months to a year.

Who do YOU Want to See Play Samus? [ Nintendo of America ]

Nintendo.com is holding a poll asking who you'd like to see play Samus in the up and coming Metroid movie. Your choices are Jessica Alba, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Garner, and Sarah Wynter. It truly frightens me that not only is Cameron Diaz on the poll, but that she's actually WINNING. Jessica Alba is currently in a close second.

InterAct Out of Console and PC Gaming [ InterAct ]

Rumor has been going around that InterAct would soon be going out of business. This speculation was made because InterAct had decided to not continue making products in the PC and console industry. However, the company is not going out of business but is rather going back to their their original foundation of consumer electronics. I got in contact with Peter Ildau, who is the head of PR at InterAct, and he told me, "We are out of the console and PC gaming industry because we would rather go back to our roots in consumer electronics and accessories; home, car, and marine audio."

The top c00b games of 2002. Mario beats out Samus?! All I got to say is WOW! Perhaps it's because Prime wasn't released until the end of the year but it was released around X-mas for a reason. Hopefully it's still selling well and will do well in Japan when it is released.

2. Metroid Prime (Nintendo)
3. Super Smash Brothers Melee (Nintendo)
4. Sonic Adventure 2 (Sega)
5. Mario Party 4 (Nintendo)
6. Resident Evil (Capcom)

Best Sellers of 2002 [ N-Sider ]

These are the best sellers of 2002. No surprise that GTA:VC is number one but what bothers me is only SMS is on there for Cube and that Halo is only number 9.

1. PS2 Grand Theft Auto: Vice City [Rockstar] (Oct. '02)
2. PS2 Grand Theft Auto 3 [Rockstar] (Oct. '01)
3. PS2 Madden NFL 2003 [Electronic Arts] (Aug. '02)
4. GBA Super Mario Advance 2 [Nintendo] (Feb '02)
5. PS2 Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec [Sony] (July '01)
6. PS2 Medal Honor Frontline [Electronic Arts] (May '02)
7. PS2 Spider-Man: The Movie [Activision] (Apr. '02)
8. PS2 Kingdom Hearts [Square EA] (Sept. '02)
9. XBX Halo [Microsoft] (Nov. '01)
10 GCN Super Mario Sunshine [Nintendo] (Aug. '02)

Now I will start to make sense...maybe. If 12 million people have PS2 and GTA:VC sells let's say 3 million copies then a quarter of PS2 owners bought the game. Now if 3 million people own Cube and a million bought SMS then a third bought the game. AND if 3 million people own Xbox and Halo sold 2 million copies then 2 THIRDS! of Xbox owners bought Halo. Now you tell me, what was the #1 and #2 best sellers of the year. EXACTLY! That was fun to explain and get off my chest. Just to let you know that most of those numbers aren't 100% accurate. They're close but not right on.

Next Generation GameCube [ New York Times ]

Nintendo has announced that they plan to launch their next generation video game system in 2005 or 2006. ``We will get ready for a (new) battle in 2005 although foreign game developers are now saying that rival next-generation systems won't come until 2006,'' Nintendo President Satoru Iwata told Reuters. In response the the recent bad sales of the GameCube and drops in stock prices, Iwata mentioned that he didn't "think the GameCube is going so bad that they will have to follow the road that Sega took in withdrawing from hardware." When questioned about rumors that Nintendo might drop out of the console business, he responded, ``When we withdraw from the home game console, that's when we withdraw from the video game business." Nintendo definitely isn't going anywhere soon.

The Score with RE2 and RE3 [ ]

Ok, a lot of you are wondering what the deal is with RE2 and RE3 being so damn expensive. I have noticed quite a few people coming to the conclusion that Capcom went back on its word saying they would be $19.99. That is the SUGGESTED price people. The retail stores can make the games as expensive as they want. So if you are looking at someone to bitch at then go complain to the stores. The reason they are the regular price for new games is because the retail stores think they will make as much or possibly more money with the price being inflated.

What a shocker, I've already bought both RE2 and RE3. If the price doesnt feel right to you then don't buy it, that is the only advice I can give you.

Free Games Rule! [ Computer and Videogames ]

NOA is to launch a new sales initiative offering a free game to anyone who purchases a GameCube at its current retail price of $149.99. The offer begins on February 9, running until May, and hardware purchased from participating stores will come with a free copy of Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 0, Star Fox Adventures or Mario Party 4.

A free copy of Metroid or Resident Evil 0?! Now thats a pretty sweet deal if you ask me. This is a nice way to try and compete with the sales of the Xbox but if you have been paying attention to system sales then you would know that Cube is owning Xbox so far this year. Let's hope it stays that way.

As for playing Game Boy Color games, most will work, but some will have color and sound distortion while others might not work at all. Obviously the player won't work with motion sensor games, and it is recommmended that you do not use vibrating games with the system. The set will come with the Game Boy Player and a start-up disc.

Yet Another Outcry Against Video Game Violence [ BBC News ]

BBC News is running an article about UK culture minister Kim Howells and his outcry against violence in the media. Fortunately, this one is not just a random bashing of video games and blaming them for violent kids, but instead talks on movies and TV as well, and actually has some good points. Howells says that the media shows "pornography of violence" in many of the latest movies, tv shows, and video games. He cautions that he is not asking for censorship, but instead says that since artists' work are viewed by younger people that they have a duty to keep it clean. Howells makes the point that he doesn't think the violence will make his children more violent, "But it's the acceptance of that heartlessness that is at the centre of all those kind of games, the kind of joy of shooting innocent bystanders or running them over in the car."

GameBoy Advance SP Details [ Planet GameCube ]

PGC has some interesting tidbits on the new GameBoy SP. Some of the more interesting facts are:

-All accessories work with it, including the e-Reader.
-Screen is the same size as the standard GBA.
-The Japanese market is getting Indigo (Purple), Black, and Platinum, while the US is getting Cobalt (metallic blue), and Platinum. Darn.
-Kirby's Tilt and Tumble will NOT work however, Pokemon Pinball and other Rumble Pak games WILL work.
-Lid is held closed by friction only, no latch or magnet. The screen is very solid and there seems to be no problem with jiggling the unit while playing and having the screen move.
-The GBA SP CAN be used while on AC Power.
-Screen is lit from the sides, just like the Afterburner, but the GBA SP is lit from ALL sides, not just the top down like the AfterBurner. It also looks better.
-The GBA will continue to be manufactured, but there is no word yet of a price drop.
-GBA SP is NOT a replacement for the GBA, only a redesign.
-Targeted towards older gamers and adults.

Sega News is Always Good, Right? [ NinGC ]

In the latest issue of Famitsu Sega makes several comments about their plans for the 2003 year. Most noticable of the comments is the "Sonic Boom." Hopefully this means we'll see more of Sonic and friends on Cube and perhaps some of him on GBA. Below are the comments in full

"Makoto Osaki de Sega-AM2 states to want to leave Virtua Fighter Quest on GameCube at the end of the year to Japan for thus celebrating the 10 years of the series Virtua Fighter."

"In the last number of the Japanese magazine Famitsu, Sega-AM2 reveals a small index relating to its new play which should leave this year to Japan. Indeed, the company indicates that the last shutter of this series left in 1995. Virtua COP 3 of Sega-AM2 is placed best to be the new play in question since Virtua COP 2 left in 1995, of the series Fighting Vipers (Arcade) and Virtua Fighter 2 (Saturn) also left into 1995 being already available. "

"Sega of Japan has just announced that "Sega Private Show 2003" will take place the 17, 20 and next 22 January in Japan in 3 different places: Tokyo, Osaka and Kyushu. The last plays of Sega will be playable during the event but no new play should be revealed."

Virtua Fighter Quest is reportedly on schedule for a late 2003 release, in time for the series' 10th anniversary.

New Information on the Game Boy Advance SP [ Nintendo of Japan ]

Nintendo of Japan's website has a few clarifications concerning the Game Boy Advance SP. For starters, you can in fact play games on the system while it is charging, however you can not use the headphone adaptor and charge the system at the same time. Also mentioned, certain Game Boy Color games may have distorted colors and sound. Another relieving bit of news is that the games such as Kirby's Tilt and Tumble can still be played using the Game Boy Advance SP, but require a special command upon loading. Finally, the site has a diagram of the system marking out where everything is on the new system.

Updated: Bakudan Yoshinoya, Planet GameCube's Japanese Correspondant, translated the part of the page that refers to the Tilt Pak games, and it turns out that the button combo only works for the one game mentioned. It is unknown whether future Tilt Pak GBA titles will feature this button combo, but it is now certain that Kirby's Tilt and Tumble will not run on the SP.

New GBA Model on the Horizon? [ USA Today ]

USA Today reports that a new design for our beloved Game Boy Advance may be hitting shelves as soon as March 23, at a price of $99. Hoping to alleviate complaints about the dark screen of the current GBA model, Nintendo has apparently given this new design a backlit screen. The new model will also come equipped with a rechargeable battery pak, effectively nullifying the problem of increased battery use due to the backlight. A new clamshell design has also been put to use, enabling the GBA to fold vertically into a tiny three inch square when not in use -- which in turn provides better protection for the otherwise easily damaged screen.

UPDATE!

The new model may be a light as only 5 ounces. This would make the GBA damn near weightless and with the addition of the backlight it's sort of a mystery how they plan to make it work but we will keep you informed.
